What is assessment and co-ordination? Ministries and government organisations have to correspond with the outside world along their daily operational routines. Once every piece of correspondence delivers its function, it gets out of the bureaucratic cycle and goes out of use permanently. In accordance with the establishment law of the National Documents Centre of Iran, all papers, correspondence, registration books, dossiers, pictures, maps, clichés, graphs, films, microfilms, cassettes, and other documents produced by a governmental body or submitted to it and under its control permanently or temporarily shall be assessed by the Centre under certain formal criteria. Those documents that are regarded as having administrative, financial, economic, judicial, political, cultural, scientific, technical or historical value shall then be transferred to the National Archives. The rest are destroyed under a legal procedure. Deciding whether a piece of document merits permanent preservation is the responsibility of the Documents Assessment and Co-ordination Department.
